File
Data stored in digital format on your computer. Files can range from word processed documents that you can edit to executables that launch your word processing application
File extension
The three letters found on the end of a file name. The extension tells the operating system which program to use to open the file
Firefox
Web browser developed by the Mozilla Corporation and external contributors. It is a free and open source browser compatible with many different operating systems
Firewall
A program or physical network hardware device that controls the inbound and outbound flow of network traffic from your network to ensure network security
FireWire
An alternate connection technology to USB for transferring data between external devices and the computer; often found on digital video cameras
Flame
An unpleasant or abusive remark left in an email or on an internet message board often intended to provoke an argument
Flash
An Adobe (formerly Macromedia) authoring software used to produce interesting and attractive content, mainly for websites. For your browser to properly understand the Flash code you have to install the ‘Flash Player’
Floppy disk
Small rectangular magnetic disks which go in the slot found on the front of your computer. The technology is becoming phased out as faster, cheaper and larger-capacity alternatives make their way into the mainstream market
Font
The typefaces you see on-screen, printed in documents or on websites
Frames
An HTML feature that allows multiple HTML documents to be displayed to form one web page. An example of such would be a web site with a navigation side bar that stays the same throughout and a content frame that changes depending on the link that has been clicked
Freeware
Copyrighted software available free of charge by the author
Front End
The part of a system that interacts directly with the user, as opposed to the back end which processes the outputs created by the users input
FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
A protocol for exchanging files between computers over a network. An FTP transaction consists of a server (the machine holding the file) and a client (the machine requesting the file)
